Sick Lads
Acrylic & impasto on a 55cm round canvas, with included authentication certificate, ready to hang.
Created alongside my Master’s research project, Alligator became the place where I processed the emotional weight of facilitating art therapy groups with young people navigating cancer. While the work was born from heavy themes, its spirit is far from sombre there’s strength, attitude, humour, and an unexpected beauty in what it means to share struggle.
Named after a Ball Park Music song that helped me decompress after each group, Alligator carries that same blend of bite and softness. The seven sculpted waves (something I didn’t consciously plan) ended up mirroring the seven young people in my program. Each wave represents an individual journey: turbulent at times, but marked by resilience, courage, and a growing sense of connection within a shared sea.
This piece honours the way grief, hope, and camaraderie can coexist. It’s a reminder that even in the most challenging spaces, something powerful and collective can rise to the surface.
Please email tanealteresa.art@hotmail.com before purchasing to discuss international/domestic shipping quotes. Alternatively, pick up is available from Taneal’s studio in West End, Brisbane.
