Created toward the end of my research project, Sick Lads captures the unexpected warmth, humour, and connections that formed within the group. The five sculpted waves represent the five young people who attended my final session, each one shaped in response to their energy, their presence, and their instinctively aligned colour palette that emerged during the final group.
The title comes from the group chat they went on to create afterward, proudly calling themselves the “Sick Lads.” What began as a therapeutic art group became something far more meaningful: a space where friendship, understanding, and shared experience took root.
The piece reflects that cohesion, the way creative expression can quietly foster belonging and honours the bond that lasted well beyond the program. I later learned they continued meeting weekly to make art together as the “Sick Lads,” a testament to the connection and community that unfolded between them.
